Why Volunteer?
Our volunteers make the difference!
By volunteering once a week during the regular tax season, and even into the extended summer season, you can help return tax credits to low-to-moderate income families in our community. We do this so we can help Delaware families and individuals most in need of our free resources. Providing this free service puts dollars back into the pockets of the families and individuals we serve. We file taxes for Delaware individuals earning $57,000 or less. Our tax filers cannot afford professional tax services or may just be overwhelmed by the process, and that’s why we are here.

The Importance of Free Tax Prep
Poverty exists in our country, our state, and our community. The poverty rate in Delaware is 12% which means that 1 out of every 8 residents lives below the poverty line. In our most populous cities, where our VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites are located, that figure almost doubles to an average of 22% so that 1 out of every 5 residents falls below the line. Free tax prep is one of the most proven effective ways to increase the income of hardworking families and individuals. We need volunteers like you to provide quality tax preparation and review, maximizing our guests’ refunds in the process. You can help reverse these statistics with the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); providing an average economic boost of about $2,400 to each family. The Child Tax Credit, Stimulus Payments, and the Recovery Rebate Credit may be available; refundable credits and other benefits that you can help your neighbors get. Your impact can be so huge. That’s why you should and must volunteer!
Under the Volunteer Protection Act of 1997, all VITA volunteers are protected from liability for any negligent acts performed within the scope of their responsibilities.
